IRRI expands their administrative offices in Hanoi

On November 4, Deputy Minister Le Quoc Doanh of the Ministry of Agricultural and Rural Development attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for an expansion of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) offices in Hanoi.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Doanh, said that rice production in Vietnam has increased every year since the 1980s noting that research by IRRI has been instrumental in the achievement.

During this time, rice farmers in Vietnam have achieved yield increases of 9.8% and gained an additional US$127 per hectare due to IRRI’s research, he underscored.

General director Matthew Morell of the Institute in turn said though much has been accomplished there is still a considerable amount of work remaining to improve the quality of rice production in Vietnam.

Mr Morell affirmed the IRRI stands ready to assist Vietnam farmers further raise productivity of higher quality rice by more efficient production methods while ensuring food safety.

On the occasion, Mr Doanh and Mr Morell announced the launch a research project aiming to develop a better rice variety that can withstand conditions brought about by drought, flood and salt intrusion.
