Markets, supermarkets see scant business as Tet winds down

Most markets, shops, and supermarkets resumed their normal operation on the fifth day of Lunar New Year (Tet), however, they welcomed few customers.

There are many traders open for business but few customers are around to buy at most markets and supermarkets in Hanoi.

As in previous years, the prices of goods are 10-20% higher than normal days.

While stalls selling fresh vegetables have a few customers, shops selling fresh meat and fish are doing meagre trade.

Supermarkets are in a similar situation with aisles deserted.

Only fresh fruit and vegetable shops are attracting customers.

Traders say their purchasing power this year is lower than in previous years.

Supermarkets offer big discounts on fresh food, for example 10-15% on pork.

Chicken wings cost VND81,000 per kilo, drumsticks (VND67,900-90,000 per kilo), tilapia (VND69,000 per kilo), and basa fish (VND59,000 per kilo).

Supermarkets sell a variety of fresh fruit at reasonable prices, for example dragon fruit (VND49,000 per kilo), grapefruit (VND85,000), and watermelon (VND22,500).

The price of apples ranges from VND55,000 to VND150,000 per kilo.

Vietnamese are beginning to change their shopping and consumption habits from traditional channels to online purchasing and reducing the bulk buying of goods.
