A business forum was held on January 11 in Hanoi to promote collaboration among the private sectors of Vietnam and Russia in line with a new free trade accord that came into force between the two economies last October.

The forum sponsored by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) was attended by a large business delegation of the Russia’s Republic of Bashkortostan and representatives of local business.

The purpose of the forum, said Doan Duy Khuong, vice chair of VCCI, in an opening speech at the conference was aimed specifically at creating an opportunity for Vietnamese business leaders to meet face to face with their Bashkortostan counterparts to discuss collaborating in joint ventures.

The Republic of Bashkortostan, once a centre of oil production of the former Soviet Union, has strengths in not only oil but manufacturing such items as machinery, equipment, helicopters and other aircraft and defence weaponry as well as medical equipment, fertilizer production and agriculture.

The business forum was held on the side-lines of an official visit by Bashkortostan Prime Minister Mardanov Rustem Habibovich to Vietnam— and the business representatives came prepared to discuss any plans for joint ventures in the referenced fields, said Mr Khuong.
