Buffalo fighting festival in Dien Bien

The fifth annual buffalo fighting festival kicked off in Dien Bien Dong district in the northern province of Dien Bien on February 6, the second day of the Lunar New Year festival (Tet).
The event is held annually during Tet and is organised by locals in Dien Bien Dong district, Dien Bien province.

     Spectators arrive at the district’s stadium early in the morning, with thousands flocking to attend the buffalo fighting competition.

The nearby mountain slopes are packed with people waiting to watch the fiercely contested competition. 
 
Over 30 buffaloes from locals communes in the district compete in the festival 
The buffaloes are carefully selected for the competition with the biggest and strongest animals favoured.
 
 
Steel barriers have been erected to form a ring which can ensure the safety of spectators
According to the organising board, this year’s event drew 30,000 visitors.
The deputy chairman of Dien Bien Dong district People’s Committee Vang A Ho said the competition aims to honour households which are good at raising buffaloes in the district whilst the festival is also an ideal venue for farmers to share techniques in cattle breeding.
At the same time the event is also an opportunity to encourage local people to improve their productivity and promote poverty reduction in a sustainable manner.
