Thousands of visitors flocked to Ha Long City in the northern province of Quang Ninh to celebrate the Winter Carnival on New Year’s Day, the first event of its kind to be held in the province.

One of the highlights of the occasion was an open stage featuring the World Natural Heritage Site of Ha Long Bay in the background, with over 100 cruise ships parading back and forth for viewers to enjoy.

Furthermore, audiences were also thrilled by performances put on by helicopters, seaplanes, and paragliders in the skies above.

Throughout the function the carnival parade featured a total of six performance sections in line with the theme of “Ha Long – the aspiration of flying dragons”, during which performers donning winter festival costumes displayed their Ha Long samba dance moves.

Visitors were also given the chance to enjoy a wide range of performances which showcased the typical cultural and tourism attractions native to the northeastern province, along with sampling a variety of delicious cuisine whilst discovering interesting tourism products throughout the carnival.

Organised by Tuan Chau Group, the carnival has been designed to offer visitors a fresh experience in Ha Long whilst helping to diversify tourism products throughout the province during the off-peak season.

The total number of visitors to Quang Ninh in 2020 is estimated to have reached 8.8 million, a decline of 37% from 2019. Of the figure, approximately 536,000 were foreigners, an annual drop of 90.7% largely caused by the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Moving forward, Quang Ninh has set a target of attracting roughly 10 million visitors ahead in 2021.
