Local image wins prize at Sony World Photography Awards 2021

A photograph captured by a local photographer themed “Drying Fish” features a lone woman surrounded by hundreds of trays containing drying fish in the Long Hai fish market in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau. With the image taken from above, the pattern of the fish on the trays resembles a large piece of fabric that the woman has seemingly put together.

An artwork by F. Dilek Uyar features on the shortlist in the travel category. It depicts Lake Tuz in Ankara, Turkey, which turns pink in the summer. On the edge of the lake is an old fountain where local shepherds occasionally bring their herds during the day, before they return to their grazing.

A photo by Ares Jonekson Saragi makes the shortlist in the street photography category. The theme is “Night in Pandemic Time” and taken at the Pondok Ranggon Cemetery in Jakarta during the afternoon. Viewers can see the funeral officers having a break, watching videos on their smartphones, and chatting with their families.

Another image taken by F Dilek Uyar is named as the winner in the street photography category. “Disinfection” represents a cinematic image which documents an employee of the health affairs unit of Ankara municipality wearing protective gear as they walk along the train platform as they thoroughly spray it with disinfectant.

A photo snapped by Cristo Pihlamäe tops the natural world and wildlife category. “Little Kiss” is an amusing picture of a hare looking out into the field as it sticks out its tongue.

An artwork created by Jinjing Lyu makes the shortlist of the landscape category.

An image with the theme of “Storm Ciara at Newhaven, East Sussex” by Dan Portch makes the shortlist of the motion category.

The winner of the landscape category goes to a photo titled “Electric Storm on Lavender” by Juan Lopez Ruiz. It captures the moment lightning strikes a flowering field of lavender in Guadalajara, Spain, with a solitary tree at the centre set against the sky at dusk.
