The project was filmed in Egypt for 1 year, and took the crew another month to edit sound and picture. This independent art project was performed by Mzung in cooperation with her two partners, including contemporary dancers Florence Moutin and Mohamed Farouk, from France and Egypt respectively.

“Sleeping in the city” discusses the issue of how humans and animals can live together in Cairo, where urban life creates various challenges for all of them.

The project also raises a big question about serious environmental pollution and challenges the viewers’ attitude toward the problem. “We can all see ourselves in “Sleeping in the city”, but of course, it takes time for some to really realize that,” a critic said.

Cairo, a sleepless city, is a place where humans and animals all live together in a noisy box. It is unclear whether they can realize others in such a ruckus. Sometimes, the only thing you can do is to close your eyes, cover your ears and desperately go to sleep and rediscover yourself.

Mzung, or Nguyen My Dzung, 33, was born in Quang Tri. She is the founding member of Autumn Meeting, an independent short film group, together with director Phan Dang Di. She is also the founder and manager of other projects.

Mzung won a third prize for her documentary short film “When our gardens grow silent” at the 6

th Faro FARCUME Awards, held in Faro, Portugal. This was also the only film of Vietnam participated. Mzung with "Sleeping in the city" means to voice for the independent borderless filmmaking sector during her short return to Vietnam.
