The Tailor selected for Oscar’s qualifying round

“Co Ba Sai Gon” (The Tailor) produced by Ngo Thanh Van has been selected for the qualifying round of the Best Foreign-Language Film award at the Oscars 2019, announced the Vietnam Cinema Department under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on September 26.

According to the regulations for the Oscars, each country can only submit one work to compete in the Best Foreign-Language Film category. To enter the qualifying round, the film must have been screened in cinemas between October 1, 2017 and September 30, 2018.
The awards ceremony is due to take place on February 24, 2019 in Los Angeles, the US.
The 90-minute romantic comedy follows Vietnamese women living in Sai Gon (now HCM City) in the 1960s. It features the culture and lifestyle of Saigonese people and the history of the ao dai (Vietnamese long dress).
In April, “The Tailor” won the Best Feature Film at the Golden Kite Awards. Its box office revenues have reached VND60 billion since its debut last year.
Other foreign films that have are competing in the category include “Shoplifters” (Japan), “Burning” (the Republic of Korea), “Roma” (Mexico), “Cold War” (Poland), and “The Wild Pear Tree” (Turkey).
