“Vietnamese Mini Chefs” enjoy making floating rice cake for Cold Food Festival

PSNews – With Vietnamese people, the Cold Food Festival is not only an important festival for the whole family to make Banh Troi (floating cakes) and Banh Chay (lean cake) to offer to ancestors, but also an occasion to connect the traditional and the modern values.

The Cold Foods Festival is a traditional festival of Vietnamese which takes place on the 3rd day of the Third Lunar month in the year.
On this occasion, many kindergarten and elementary schools provide lessons on making Banh Troi (floating cakes) and Banh Chay (lean cake) for their pupils.
Preparing ingredients require considerable efforts. Yet, steps to make the cakes are quite simple. |

Floating and lean cakes have long been pure white glutinous rice. |
The stuffing of banh troi is a piece of dark brown sugar and banh chay is steamed green bean paste mixed with sugar and coconut. |
There are some vivid colours being added to the cakes in recent years. |
Vibrant colours of the cake come from natural ingredients such as pumpkin for yellow, magenta plant for purple, red from gac fruit, matcha for green and rice for pure white. |
