Xoan singing aims to honor the Hung Kings, the founders of Viet Nam, to pray for good weather and harvests, as well as praise the land and daily life in rural areas. Although Xoan singing was usually held in the past at the festival of the Hung Kings' Temple, it was once at risk of dying out because few young people learnt Xoan singing.
Xoan singing was by UNESCO as part of the world's intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent protection in 2011. The performing art was transferred to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2017 in recognition for efforts by the local communities and the national authorities to reinforce the viability of Xoan singing.
In the near future, travel agencies will continue introducing Xoan singing and Hung Kings worship rituals – two UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritages of humanity to the public.By Phung Nguyen
