The latest report from the committee shows that over the past two months, there were 3,345 traffic accidents nationwide, killing more than 1,500 people and injuring over 2,500 others.

The horrific figures, however, showed an improvement in traffic safety in the country compared to the same period last year when the record was even higher.

In February, 726 people were killed and 1,169 others injured in 1,583 traffic accidents, which is a fall of 100, 313 and 180, respectively from the numbers of February 2017.

Like last year, the Lunar New Year or Tet Holiday saw a sharp increase in traffic accidents. A report from the Ministry of Public Security showed that as many as 195 people have been killed and 199 others injured in 218 traffic accidents during the seven days of the 2018 Tet holiday.

Some provinces saw a high number of traffic accident fatalities including Dak Lak (14), Tien Giang and Ha Tinh (11), and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (10).

Most of the accidents occurred on roads and were caused by drunk driving and breaking traffic rules, the committee said.
