122 killed in traffic accidents over six-days of Tet

A total of 174 traffic accidents have been recorded nationwide, with 122 people killed and an additional 150 injured during the six-day celebrations for the Lunar New Year (Tet).

Statistics released by the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security indicate that figures have fallen by 14 in terms of the amount of traffic accidents. This comes despite there being an increase of nine in terms of the number of deaths, whilst there has been a drop by 32 in the number of injuries occurring in comparison to the same period from last year.

The Tet holiday saw traffic police handle 2,160 cases of road traffic violations, with fines totaling over VND1 billion. This is in addition to 25 automobiles and 318 motorbikes being seized, whilst 301 drivers had their driving licenses revoked for negligence. Indeed, 867 cases in 52 localities nationwide were due to drink driving.

Most notably, the number of traffic accidents related to drink driving significantly decreased in comparison with last year’s figure.

According to a report published by the Ministry of Health, the number of traffic accidents resulting in emergencies over Tet was reduced by over 18 per cent compared to the previous year.

A representative from the National Traffic Safety Committee also stated that the committee is constantly receiving hot-line calls from people nationwide with them being able to quickly connect with relevant agencies in order to deal with emergency cases in a fast and appropriate manner.
