2,223 martyrs’ remains reburied in 2016

As reported at a conference held on January 10 by the Steering Committee for Search and Collection of Martyrs’ Remains, aiming to review its task performance in 2016 and to roll out key tasks for 2017, of total martyrs’ remains found, 767 sets of remains of martyrs were tested while 256 martyrs’ remains were identified.

The conference, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, head of the Steering Committee for Search and Collection of Martyrs’ Remains (Steering Committee 1237 in short), also saw the attendance of leaders of the Committee and representatives from the Ministry of National Defense.

In 2016, the search and collection of martyrs’ remains were implemented in an intensive and comprehensive manner while information dissemination was also enhanced, and the review and completion of documents and lists of martyrs were actively implemented.

Addressing the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam praised the efforts made by the Ministry of National Defense, the Steering Committee 1237 and relevant agencies, especially officials and soldiers involved in the search and collection of martyrs’ remains.

The Deputy Prime Minister then asked the Ministry of National Defense, with high political determination, to well coordinate with ministries, branches and local authorities to direct and supervise the implementation of key tasks in 2017.

Vietnam has reburied 2,223 martyrs’ remains and found three mass graves of Vietnamese martyrs in 2016.

He also urged the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs to complete the database of martyrs’ graves in cemeteries and transfer it to the Steering Committee 1237, contributing to integrating and completing the martyr portfolios.

“Local authorities and branches should promote popularization, aiming to raise public awareness of the importance of the work”, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said. He also asked to upgrade the DNA testing center of the Military Forensic Institute.
