Almost 2,800 people killed in traffic accidents in four months
The National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) said the country saw 6,020 traffic accidents with 2,788 deaths and 4,636 injuries from December 16, 2017 to April 15, 2018.
NTSC Vice Chairman Khuat Viet Hung said comparing with the same period last year, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 5.48%, and the number of deaths and injuries also dropped by 0.25% and 9.44% respectively.
In the period between March 16 and April 15, the country witnessed 1,346 traffic accidents, with 639 deaths and 1,009 injuries, down 13.5% compared to the same period last year.
To ensure traffic safety and reduce congestion and the number of traffic accidents in May the NTSC will unveil a hotline on the mass media to receive feedbacks on the traffic situation on national holidays during Liberation Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1).
Inspection teams will also be sent to examine traffic situation at localities with high rates of traffic accidents in the first quarter of this year and find solutions to traffic offences.
A conference will be held by NTSC, the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Public Security to review the implementation of the Prime Minister’s direction on strengthening control over transport capacity of heavy vehicles.
