PSNews - The working mission of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development led by Deputy Director of the Irrigation Department Tran Quang Hoai in collaboration with the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee on May 9th inspected the embankment erosion situation in Bac Lieu.

During the inspection, Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee Duong Thanh Trung briefed the working mission on the erosion situation in the province.

Bac Lieu is a province with great potential for marine economy with a coastline of 56km and a population of 100,000 people. However, this area is affected by climate change, sea level rise, saline intrusion, especially coastal erosion and landslide due to rising tides with strong waves and winds, which have caused heavy damage.

The working mission inspects the embankment erosion situation in Bac Lieu.

The two seriously eroded areas in 2017 are along the Ganh Hao dyke section (Ganh Hao town, Dong Hai district) and Nha Mat dyke section (Nha Mat ward, Bac Lieu city).

Relevant agencies revealed that the main causes of embankment erosions in the area were the impacts of water currents nearby the shore, tides and strong waves and winds hitting the sea wall violently and continuously.

In recent years, the changes of coastal currents and the effects of high tides along with sea waves have caused a big loss of the coastal protection forest. The Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee has invited many scientists from different institutes and universities to seek for solutions.

At the moment, the cost estimates to repair the eroded areas mount to 150 billion VND.

According to an initial calculation, Bac Lieu needs 340 billion VND to concretize its whole sea embankment.

The Chairman of the Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee has proposed the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to take the lead in examining the sea dyke erosion situation in Bac Lieu province and in the Mekong Delta area as a whole.
