Hai Duong officially becomes first-tier city

A ceremony was held on October 26 to announce the Prime Minister’s decision to recognise Hai Duong city in the province of the same name as a first-tier city.

Attending the event were National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Minister of Public Security General To Lam, and Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung, among others.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy PM Dung praised Hai Duong province and its city for making great achievements over the past few years.

He urged the city and the province to continue making efforts to fulfill all their set socio-economic development targets, especially speeding up economic restructuring, improving urban infrastructure, and boosting administrative reform.

Becoming a first-tier city is an important milestone for Hai Duong city, Dung said, stressing that the city must try its best to become a smart, modern and cultural urban area and a livable city.

Hai Duong city was established in 1998 and recognised as a second-tier city in 2009. Its economy has continuously grown year on year, reaching 13-15 percent on average. The city posted an annual export expansion of 15 percent, higher than the province’s average.

After the ceremony, the traditional Eastern Land Cultural Festival took place, featuring stage and street art performances and parades along several streets in Hai Duong city.
