Half a ton of ivory seized at seaport

PSNews –The Ho Chi Minh (HCM) City Customs Department in collaboration with the Police Department of Smuggling Prevention and the Nha Rong Border Guard post on December 1 discovered and seized more than half a ton of ivory illegally imported into Vietnam.,

According to the HCMC city Customs Department, On December 1, the joint forces suddenly checked three containers at the Saigon seaport, imported by a company located in Lle Van Hoan street, ward 13, Tan Binh district.

The joint forces discovered 529 kg of ivory inside the two wooden blocks.

When opening the containers, the relevant forces found a large amount of ivory hidden inside two hollow wood blocks with 4 meters long and 70 cm wide although ivory was put deep inside the wood blocks and sophisticatedly sealed with a misture of plaster and sawdust. The two wood blocks looked clearly normal.

With their manual testing methods, the joint forces discovered 529 kg of ivory inside the two wooden blocks. According to the forces, the tuck amount costs above VND 20 billion on the black market.

Earlier in October and November, the HCMC’s Customs Department also detected six smuggling cases with tons of pangolin and ivory tusks.
