Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, Nguyen Duc Chung, has decided to halt a project of paving local streets with natural stones.

The decision was made following the public concerns over the quick deterioration of many streets which have been paved with natural stones.

According to the chairman’s document, earlier, municipal authorities instructed districts to pave local streets which have deteriorated. Before paving natural stones, the foundation of the pavement has to be consolidated with the ensured technical infrastructure.

Many streets in Hanoi have quickly deteriorated after being paved with natural stones

The natural stones are said to have the duration of between 50 and 70 years.

However, during the implementation process, some localities did not follow the city’s instruction. They did not pay attention to the quality of foundation.

The burying of utility cables and water pipes underground has not yet been finished on many streets, but many localities have still implemented the natural stone pavement, Chung noted.

The chairman asked local districts to investigate into degraded streets which have been paved with natural stones.

He noted that the natural stone paving will only be prioritised for inner-city areas with historical meaning. Meanwhile, other areas need to be assessed for the necessity.

He requested to suspend the natural stone paving which is to be carried out to check whether streets can meet all requirements for the work.

Meanwhile, for streets which have been paved or are being paved, it is compulsory to examine the work quality as regulated by the law. In case, the quality of the work is not ensured, streets must be paved again.
