The capital of Hanoi will set off fireworks in just one place as opposed to the 30 previously scheduled, according to the municipal Party Committee.

The move is to support ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in the locality, the committee says in its recently issued conclusions.

The Party Committee requested the administration to seek a suitable venue for a high-altitude fireworks performance on Lunar New Year's Eve that will involve no large gatherings.

Along with this, a number of other drastic measures aimed at containing the potential spread of COVID-19 must be taken before, during, and after the Lunar New Year.

Firework displays are part and parcel of the Lunar New Year holiday in Vietnam that attract huge crowds of people to take to streets to enjoy the show. However, the fresh outbreak of the coronavirus has affected the plan.

The capital has so far recorded more than 20 locally transmitted coronavirus cases since the virus recurred a week ago.
