Huge bomb successfully moved to safer place for detonation in Hai Phong

PSNew - Military engineers of the Hai Phong Municipal Military Command on August 19 successfully deactivated and removed a huge bomb, uncovered earlier in Tam Bac river, to a safer place for detonation.

The 250kg bomb, 30cm in diameter and 160cm in length, was found on August 18 afternoon by a swan caretaker, named Ha Van Cham, in Tam Bac river, Hai Phong city. The bomb was lodged so deep in the riverbed that it was only detected once the water level dropped.

Upon receiving the information, the Hai Phong Municipal Military Command sent its troops in coordination with relevant forces to blockade the location and evacuate locals to a safer place. 

On August 19, engineers of the Hai Phong Municipal Military Command deactivated and removed the bomb to a safer place for detonation.

According to official statitics, Vietnam is one of countries most contaminated with unexploded ordnances. It is estimated that about 800,000 tonnes of unexploded ordnances were left across the country after the war ended in 1975, scattered over all 63 cities and provinces, with a high concentration in central provinces.

Experts said that Vietnam needs dozens of billions of USD and about 100 years to clean out these bombs, mines and unexploded ordnances left by wars.

Since 1975, unexploded ordnances have killed more than 40,000 people and injured 60,000 others in Vietnam. Many of them are family breadwinners and even children. All the remaining unexploded ordnances are dangerous and can explode at any time with external impacts, causing casualties to human.
