PSNews - The Indonesian Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in coordination with relevant units handed over 695 Vietnamese fishermen to the Vietnam Coast Guard Authority on June 9th. The return was taken place at Batam Island, Indonesia.
The handover has shown a goodwill of the Indonesian Government and resulted from endless efforts of the Vietnamese Government through Vietnam’s Embassy in Jakarta and the Indonesian Embassy in Hanoi.
The negotiation process and preparation for the return of the Vietnamese fishermen was carried out by the Embassy of Indonesia in Hanoi 3 weeks ago.
For Vietnamese fishermen, they have surely learnt valuable lessons on compliance of domestic and foreign maritime laws, and more importantly, they will not trespass Indonesian waters.
Both Vietnam and Indonesia are currently seeking solutions to a hotline mechanism and opportunities for cooperation on fisheries.
