Infection tally in new wave hit 2,164, with 129 more cases confirmed

The infection tally of Vietnam's fourth coronavirus wave rose to 2,164 after an additional 129 new COVID-19 cases of local transmission were confirmed by the Ministry of Health on May 23.

The 129 cases recorded in six localities included Bac Giang (68), Bac Ninh (48), K Hospital’s Tan Trieu facility (7), Hai Duong (3), Ninh Binh (2), and Da Nang (1).

All domestic infections are identified as F1 contacts with other confirmed coronavirus patients or related to previous outbreaks at industrial parks.

The latest infections pushed up the total locally transmitted cases to 3,734, while the number of imported cases was 1,483.

The same day, Vietnam also recorded the 42nd death relating to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), also the seventh in the latest coronavirus outbreak.

Notably, five out of the 30 pandemic-hit localities, namely Yen Bai, Quang Ngai, Dong Nai, Nghe An, Quang Ninh, have  gone 14 days without detecting any new local cases.

Among those undergoing treatment, 118 have tested negative for the SARS-CoV-2 virus at least one, with the majority reporting negative results.

The nation has so far documented a total of 2,164 domestic cases in the latest coronavirus wave, including six deaths. Bac Giang and Bac Ninh still top the infection tally at 919 and 467.
