Illegal stone mining has recently been detected in several localities of Nghe An, especially in Nghia Dan and Quy Hop districts, where monolith prevails. In fact, large pieces of monolith can be found in gardens and fields. This type of stone usually has good quality, and can be used to make sculptural pieces and other rockworks or to decorate resorts or houses. Due to its high economic value, many people hunt for the stone.

In Nghia Hieu and Nghia Duc communes of Nghia Dan district, local people have found and collected a large number of this type of stone from their paddy fields.

The local authorities warned that the unplanned mining of stone can cause a great loss to natural resources and lead to social disorder. Local authorities of various districts urged the provincial leaders and competent agencies to give instructions on the mining of this type of stone.

Hoang Nghia Hieu, Vice Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People’s Committee, said this type of stone should be seen as a mineral resource of the province.

Therefore, the local authorities should immediately control the illegal mining of monolith. The Provincial People’s Committee asked the Provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment to find out solutions to stop the situation, avoiding the loss of natural resources.
