Number of traffic deaths in Vietnam falls

Despite a series of serious crashes in the past two months, traffic deaths fell in Vietnam when compared against the same period last year as the government continued to focus on improving road safety.

The number of people who died in traffic accidents fell by 20 from 1,590 last year for the period January-February to 1,570 this year, according to preliminary data from the National Traffic Safety Committee.

In addition, there were there were another 2,660 recorded injuries out of the 3,465 reported traffic accidents for the two-month period.

The traffic committee reported that traffic police issued 287,890 tickets for moving violations with total fines of US$8.4 million. They seized 2,724 cars, 46,887 motorbikes and 539 other types of motor vehicles.
