According to the Vietnam National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation, by December 6, Vietnam had had more than 2,500 patients waiting for organ transplants. And from June 2013 to November 2020, Vietnamese doctors implemented a total of 5,473 organ transplants.

Prof. Trinh Hong Son, Director of Vietnam National Coordinating Center for Human Organ Transplantation said that the source of organs for transplantation for the patients is mainly from living donors. In the coming time, the center will continuously improve quality and professional skills as well as promote communication campaigns on organ donation and its significant medical and humane values, contributing to saving more patients with serious illnesses.

The first kidney transplant was successfully carried out in Vietnam in 1992 and 12 years later, local doctors conducted the first liver graft surgery.

As announced, Vietnam passed a law related to organ donation in 2006, under which Vietnamese citizens aged 18 and above have the right to donate their tissue or organs. Under the law, organ and tissue donors will receive several privileges, including free healthcare services, free health insurance and priority for organ and tissue transplants.
