Reasons of land subsidence in Da Lat revealed

The Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee held an urgent meeting with geological experts and provincial authorities on April 27, to find out the reasons why Da Lat downtown was cracked and sunk.

Vice Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee Pham S stated that the ground of the incident area is very weak and contains a large amount of underground water. 

In particular, in recent days, the total rainfall in Da Lat center reached over 110mm filling up the area’s underground cavity with water.

This has made the surface weaker. Meanwhile,  the weight of the buildings on ground has also added to the cracks and land depressions from Nguyen Van Troi street to Phan Dinh Phung and Truong Cong Dinh.

Dealing with the problems, authorities and experts agreed to block water flows leading to the area, while pumping water out as well as dismantling houses in a high risk of collapse.

In addition, the Lam Dong Provincial People's Committee also asked involved agencies to promptly carry out geological drills to locate the old rubbish dumping area for a thorough solution.

In the coming days, Lam Dong province will install monitoring and warning systems in this area.
