PSNews – 2017 has marked 20 years since the Internet first came to Vietnam. By now, the number of Internet users in Vietnam has reached 54% of the population. Although the internet has brought about many benefits, there are still several issues related to the use of the internet, particularly in sharing information on social networks.

To clarify drawbacks of the internet, the Ministry of Information and Communications in collaboration with the Embassy of Sweden held, for the first time, the Vietnam Internet Forum 2017 on November 27-28, in Hanoi.

The forum drew the participation of over 40 domestic and foreign speakers and support from domestic agencies and international organizations.

Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Pereric Hogberg, said that the forum themed “Digital for good” aimed to promote the use of the internet for development and create new opportunities for people of all walks of life.

Hogberg stressed that nobody had ever predicted that the internet could have grown at a current pace and could have strong impacts on Vietnam, Sweden and other countries in the world. It cannot be denied that the internet with its positive impacts has triggered numerous business innovations and new economic concepts.

At the same time, the internet also helps update people on hot news and hot issues and makes public agencies more open, transparent and responsible.

However, it is not easy for people and organizations to filter and control information on the Internet. In particular, it is harder for press agencies as they have to select various information sources before giving the genuine one to their readers.

As the internet supplies a good deal of information, internet users have to have ability of identifying good or bad information.

At the forum, General Secretary of the Vietnam Internet Association Vu The Bình stated that this event discussed three issues: building standard behavior of Internet users in business; sharing information on social networks and releasing a handbook for young internet users.

"It is clear that Vietnam has built a very good Internet infrastructure. The number of Internet users in Vietnam is growing. However, Vietnamese internet users do not seem to have kept pace with this rapid growth; as a result, there have been bad behaviors on social networks, such as publishing sensitive and private information, fake and false information, frauds and slanders.

According to officials, drawbacks of the internet have been and will be discussed in many forums to seek good solutions. Delegates at the forum also suggested putting into official education and training programmes at schools so that young people can learn good knowledge of the internet, and practice standard acts when using the internet. This will create foundation to set the regulations Internet users” In Vietnam, Binh concluded.
