Support recovery efforts in drought affected regions

Ambassador of the Republic of Korea visit Kon Tum to support recovery efforts in drought affected regions. 9,000 hygiene kits were distributed in three provinces – Kon Tum, Gia Lai, and Ca Mau reaching out to over 15,000 women and girls in these communities.
“I hope our support will contribute to the recovery efforts so that the people of Kon Tum and other provinces can soon return to their previous livelihoods,” said Ambassador Lee Hyuk of the Republic of Korea during his visit to the drought affected commune of Dak To Re in Kon Tum province on September 9, 2016.
Earlier this June, the Korean Government committed 300,000 USD in emergency relief aid to provide humanitarian support to communities in the Central Highland and Mekong Delta that have been severely affected by unprecedented drought spell. 

Since then, the Korean Embassy in Hanoi have been working with the UN Women and Vietnam Women’s Union in carrying out the project to improve sanitation and hygiene conditions of women and girls in the affected communities. Specifically, the Korean Government distributed 9,000 hygiene kits in three provinces – Kon Tum, Gia Lai, and Ca Mau reaching out to over 15,000 women and girls in these communities.

This support builds on the on-going efforts of the UN Women and Vietnam Women’s Union to improve sanitation, prevent spread of diseases, promote early recovery and in the longer term, strengthen resilience. “I hope our support will contribute to the recovery efforts so that the people of Kon Tum and other provinces can soon return to their previous livelihoods. 
For Vietnam, as one of the more vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change, effective response measures together with preventive efforts against climate induced disasters are crucial for communities to become more resilient against natural hazards” said Ambassador Lee Hyuk of the Republic of Korea during his visit to the drought affected commune of Dak To Re in Kon Tum province on September 9, 2016. date, over 2 million people in 18 provinces have been affected by the intense drought and saltwater intrusion, suffering from the shortage of fresh water supplies, deteriorating sanitation and hygiene conditions, malnutrition and erosion of livelihoods. Although weather conditions have improved, many communities continue to suffer from secondary effects and are still in need of much support as they strive to recover.
