Vietnam and Korea exchange experience on national reform and sustainable development

PSNews – The Institute of Development Strategy (Minister of Planning & Investment) in collaboration with Forum Oh-rae on March 24h held conference “National reform and sustainable development in East Asia.”

Facing dramatic and increasingly unpredictable changes, Vietnam has to carry out intensive reforms particularly in terms of structure so as to continue to grow and develop. To this end, human resources and science-technology are two core factors.

One of the three strategic breakthroughs of Vietnam in 2011-2020 periods is developing high quality manpower with a focus on fundamental and comprehensive renewal of national education.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of Forum Oh-rae stressed, Vietnam and Korea are two centers of peace and sustainable development of the Asia-Pacific region. Vietnam and Korea have similarities in culture and history of stages of socio-economic development. Therefore, he raised the points which Vietnam should take into consideration while accelerate socio-economic development. These include industry structure, state-owned enterprises and corruption.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Tue Anh – Deputy Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management also compared Vietnam to other countries in the region with higher development levels and asserted that Vietnam is able to narrow the gap of competitiveness but it should make a great effort, particularly fundamental reforms in higher education and training from high school upwards. She called it a big challenge for Vietnam.

Ms. Tue Anh also give several suggestions such as renewing training methods and prioritizing public resources for training, along with improving training quality in prioritized sectors of Vietnam while encouraging and supporting start-ups as well as improving manpower quality.

2017 marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-South Korea relations (December 22nd 1992 – December 22nd 2017). South Korea is currently the largest foreign investor in Vietnam with total investment of more than 50 billion USD with about 5,600 active projects.
