A delegation of the Vietnam Journalists Association (VJA) led by its President Thuan Huu attended the 19th General Assembly of the Confederation of ASEAN Journalists (CAJ) which took place in Bangkok, Thailand from January 24-28.

In his opening remarks, Thuan Huu, CAJ President, reviewed milestones in the over 42-year history of the CAJ and applauded achievements recorded by the CAJ and press associations, confederations and clubs of its member countries over the past time.

The VJA undertook the CAJ Chairmanship in 2015 when the ASEAN Community was established, he said, adding that the VJA has joined hands with its counterparts in the CAJ to build a dynamic and united confederation.

Through effective cooperation programmes, the CAJ has brought about opportunities to its members to share their viewpoints on issues of shared concern, both bilaterally and multilaterally, helping them improve professional knowledge and skills, he said.

The VJA will continue its close coordination with the Confederation of Thai Journalists (CTJ) which will assumes the CAJ Chair during 2018-2020 in order to turn the CAJ into an organisation with regional influences, contributing to building an ASEAN Community of peace, solidarity, stability, prosperity, mutual understanding and trust.

During the five-day event, the General Assembly assessed the implementation of CAJ programmes during 2015-20417, supplemented and amended CAJ regulations and issued the Bangkok Declaration, affirming the determination to improve the prestige of regional journalists’ organisations.

On this occasion, the Club of Cambodian Journalists became the eighth member of the CAJ.

Thuan Huu handed over the CAJ Chairmanship to CTJ President Thepchai Yong.
