PSNews - The Fund for Prevention and Control of Tobacco Harms under the Ministry of Health and the Vietnam Fine Arts Association organized the award ceremony of the painting contest on prevention and fight against harmful effects of cigarettes.

A second-prize winner of the contest.

Organizers have chosen 3 third prizes, 3 second prizes and 1 collective prize for Kim Binh Primary School (Phu Ly, Ha Nam). None of the 800 entries was selected for the first prize.

The annual surveys conducted independently by the Vital Strategies Community Health Organization in the period of 2014-2018 showed that the campaigns against tobacco in the 2014-2018 period has had a positive impact on the attitudes and behaviors of both smokers and non-smokers, and made many smokers not smoke near other people and try to quit smoking.

The number of smokers receiving advice to quit smoking from their family members also increased from 44% in 2017 to 50% in 2018. 70% of the smokers tried to quit smoking and over 60% of the non-smokers tried to advise near-by smokers to quit smoking.

Over the past 5 years, there has also been a significant increase in people’s understanding of the harmful effects of passive smoking. 96% of the smokers say they are concerned about their children's health when they smoke near their children. More than 90% of the non-smokers said they should ask smokers not to smoke near others.

The entries, particularly the awardees, of the contest have conveyed a strong message of tobacco harm to people’s health, contributing to warning people of tobacco harm and reducing smoking rates as well as the numbers of patients with smoking-related diseases and deaths due to smoking in Vietnam in the coming time.
