On October 24, National Assembly (NA) deputies discussed the draft law on belief and religion focusing on the freedom of belief and religion of those who are temporarily detained and imprisoned.

A number of religious activities that previously required registration and licenses will be allowed to take place with notice.

Thich Thanh Quyet, a deputy of Quang Ninh province said, “The issuance of the law is part of the instiutionalization of the 2013 Constitution aimed at ensuring the freedom of belief and religion. Many licenses and permissions have been replaced with notices.

The law has one chapter on the freedom of belief and state responsibility for religious activities helping religious establishments in their international integration”.

The draft law also stipulates the right to freedom of belief and religion for foreigners living in Vietnam.

Dang Ngoc Nghia from Thua Thien Hue province said,“Foreigners need to say that their religious practices don’t violate the law and Article 5 of the Law on belief and religion. The place for foreigners to practice their belief and religion needs to be legal. Some religions are not present in Vietnam, so the draft law needs to stipulate the places where foreign tourists can practice”.
