President Ram Nath Kovind and his spouse are making a State visit to Vietnam from November 18 to 20 at the invitation of President Nguyen Phu Trong. This is the first visit to Vietnam and also the first to Asia by President Ram Nath Kovind since he took office in July 2017. 
The visit is significant in continuing the efforts to cement and develop the growing comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and India.

After the wellcome ceremony, President Ram Nath Kovind held talks with General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and President Nguyen Phu Trong, met National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
Vietnam and India set up their diplomatic relation on January 7, 1972. In 2007, the relationship between the two nations was elevated to a level of strategic partnership, with a focus on politics-diplomacy, national defence-security, economy-trade, energy, science-technology and culture-education.
Following the Vietnam’s visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2016, the two nations upgraded their strategic partnership to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
 Earlier, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, his spouse and entourage paid tribute to late President Ho Chi Minh at his mausoleum, and laid a wreath at the Memorials to martyrs.
