The visit was made at the invitation of Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Vietnam.

Speaker Park Byeong Seug is expected to hold talks with Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan to discuss measures to boost cooperative relations between the two countries and two legislative bodies.

Speaker Park is also scheduled to meet with other Vietnamese leaders during his stay in the country.

Vietnam and the Republic of Korea established diplomatic ties in December 1992. Bilateral relations have developed strongly, especially after both sides lifted their strategic cooperation partnership in 2009.

The RoK is one of Vietnam’s leading important partners, while Vietnam is a key partner in the RoK’s New Southern policy.

Economic cooperation is a key pillar and a bright spot in bilateral relations. The Vietnam-RoK free trade agreement came into effect in 2015 and both sides are striving to raise two-way trade to US$200 billion in 2020.

By September 2019, the RoK was Vietnam’s largest foreign direct investor, injecting approximately US$70 billion into 8,000 projects.

The RoK is currently Vietnam’s second largest tourism market. In 2019, about 4.2 million Korean tourists visited Vietnam and nearly 800,000 Vietnamese people visited the RoK. Before COVID-19 broke out in the region, there were nearly 2,000 flights each month connecting localities of the two countries.

Many localities have signed cooperation documents, helping strengthen the friendship and good relationship between the two countries.
