Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Head of the Vietnamese Permanent Mission to the United Nations, has reiterated Vietnam’s stance on chemical weapons, condemning all cases involving their use at the UN Security Council’s online meeting on chemical weapons held on April 15 in Syria.
With meetings regarding the matter taking place on a monthly basis, the conference was convened based on the council’s Resolution 2118 which was adopted in 2013.
The Vietnamese diplomat underlined the importance of fully implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, as well as expressing the nation’s support for activities conducted by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in accordance with the convention.
During the meeting, Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, provided information regarding the regular report compiled by the OPCW Director General, which outlines co-operation activities between the organisation and Syria between February 24 and March 23.
The report states that the OPCW has halted all of its on-site activities as a result of the ongoing impact of the novel coronavirus.VNA
