Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, Chargé d'Affaires of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, made the affirmation during a recent meeting held to discuss activities between the UNSC and OSCE.

The Vietnamese diplomat acknowledged the overall importance of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in terms of promoting dialogue, building trust, settling conflicts, and fostering development in Europe, while encouraging the OSCE and the UN to improve ties in general.

He therefore welcomed commitments made by Sweden in its capacity as Chair of the OSCE 2021 to continue promoting multilateralism, the UN Charter, international law, confidence-building measures, and the implementation of the various agendas relating to women, peace, and security.

Furthermore, UNSC members also expressed their desire to find solutions to complex security challenges throughout Europe, whilst welcoming the actions of Sweden to give priority to promoting the role and participation of women. Indeed, since assuming the position of Chair on January 1, Sweden are keen to deal with issues on peace and security.

In his speech, OSCE Chairperson-in-Office and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Ann Linde emphasised that the OSCE continues to be the largest regional security organisation in the world, playing an important role in finding common solutions to numerous challenges in the UNSC’s agenda, and affirmed the importance of the OSCE-UN cooperation.

Several countries also moved to raise concerns regarding ongoing conflicts in Nagorny-Karabakh, Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia.

At present, the OSCE and the UN are closely collaborating through high-level dialogue mechanisms and information-sharing and co-ordination mechanisms at an expert level.

On December 10, 2019, the OSCE and the UN Secretariat issued a joint statement stating support for the 1993 Cooperation and Coordination Framework.

Since 2004, the UNSC has held an annual meeting for the purpose of listening to the report of the Chairperson of the OSCE.
