Cooperation in drug combat in Vietnam-Lao border area

PSNews-The General Department of Police (G.D 2) under the MPS of Vietnam and the General Department of Police under Lao’s Security Ministry organized a conference to summarize cooperation activities to control complicated  drug situations in the border areas of Son La (Vietnam) and Houaphanh (Laos).

Over the past years, due to negative impacts of increased drug crimes, in the world and region, especially in the "Golden Triangle" area, the situation of drug crimes in the Vietnam-Laos border, particularly drug trafficking across the border section of Houaphanh (Laos) and Son La (Vietnam), has become more complicated. Against this backdrop, on November 5 2015, the Directors of the General Departments of Police of the two countries signed an Action Plan to address the complicated situation of drug trafficking in the border areas in the two provinces.

Accordingly, various relevant units under the General Department of Police and police force of the 10 Vietnamese provinces bordering Laos in collaboration with other Vietnamese forces, including the Border Guard and Vietnam Customs, deployed various plans to control drug-related crimes, actively carried out information dissemination activities, grasped thoroughly local situations, targets, methods and tricks of drug criminals in the border areas.

The drug police force of the 10 Vietnamese border provinces in association with other forces conducted investigation into 2,626 drug cases and arrested 5,538 suspects, seized 128.3kg of heroin; 64.1kg of opium; 97.5kg dry marijuana; 20.1kg and 271.953 tablets of synthetic drugs and many related assets and documents. In addition, the Vietnam Border Guard coordinated with the authorities of Laos to crack down on various drug rings in Laos.

Speaking at the event, Lieutenant General Dong Dai Loc, Deputy Director of the General Department of Police, stressed the need to duplicate the good model of cooperation among forces along the border section of Son La and Houaphanh in tackling the complex drug crime situation in the other areas of the whole Vietnam-Laos borderline. He also emphasized that the effective control of drug-related crime situations along the border contributed to ensuring security and order in the area, facilitating cultural exchange activities, developing trade as well as solidarity and friendship between the two countries.
