The Meeting takes place on April 26 and 27.

This is the second time the MPS of Vietnam has hosted the Meeting. It held the 3rd Meeting for the first time in 2008.

This year’s meeting has for the first time been held since the formation of the ASEAN Community (December 31, 2015).

This year’s event saw the participation of representatives from the 10 ASEAN member countries, the Secretariat of the ASEAN and the Secretariat of the Treaty.

Senior Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong, Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of Public Security, Head of the Organization Board, highly appreciated the outcomes of the implementation of the Treaty as well as the legal assistance in criminal matters among the ASEAN countries over the past time, especially in the context that all ASEAN members have been striving to consolidate and bring the ASEAN Community to a new height.

He also underline that the implementation of the Treaty also faced various obstacles as measures and scope of judicial assistance defined in the Treaty are restricted. Similarly, its validity is limited as the treaty   has yet to be an official document of ASEAN.

Deputy Minister Le Quy Vuong hoped that this year’s meeting would provide a good opportunity for delegates to exchange information, scientific research and practical experiences of ASEAN members and non-ASEAN countries as well as to review the implementation of the Treaty so as to identify obstacles, shortcomings and seek solutions to better implement the Treaty in the future.

On the schedule, delegates will listen to reports from the 10 ASEAN countries on the results of the implementation of the 7th Meeting (2014), and experiences shared by international experts. The meeting is also expected to formalize the deal as a document of  ASEAN as well as consider Kazakhstan’s request for joining the Treaty, and make a schedule for the 9th meeting.
