Gia Lai Police strengthens information dissemination about upcoming election at detention center

Point B, Clause 1, Article 9 of the Law on Enforcement of Custody and Temporary Detention defines that persons held in custody or temporary detention are allowed to exercise the voting right in accordance with the Law on Election of National Assembly deputies and People’s Council deputies, as well as the right to vote in referenda in accordance with the Law on Referendum. 

These days, the preparation for the upcoming election of deputies to the 15th National Assembly and all-level People's Councils is underway across the country, including detention facilities.  

In the Gia Lai Temporary Detention Center run by the Gia Lai Provincial Police Department, over the last 2 months, all the staff of the center has been busy preparing materials and contents to give full information about the right to vote, importance of the election and related contents to inmates under custody or temporary detention at the center.

According to Colonel Tran Van Thanh, Chief Warden of the Gia Lai Temporary Detention Center, the center has 351 “special voters”, who will exercise the voting right at a polling station in Dien Hong Ward, Pleiku City.

He also said that, 24 hours prior to the election (May 23), the center will close the electoral register and distribute electoral cards to the detainees eligible to the voting right.

Lieutenant Colonel Chu Ngoc Dien, Deputy Warden said that, after receiving the election plan from the Gia Lai Provincial Police Department, the center’s officers came to each detention cell to inform detainees about their voting rights.

It showed that persons held in custody or temporary detention basically grasped their rights and would exercise the rights according to the laws, Lieutenant Colonel Dien said.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Dien, on the day of the election, along with the main ballot box displayed at the Gia Lai Provincial Police Department, an extra ballot box will be taken to the detention center for other detainees who cannot go out can exercise their voting right.

When the voting is completed, the ballot box will be handed over to the Election Committee of Dien Hong Ward, Pleiku City, along with the main ballot box at the Gia Lai Police Headquarters.

It is known that 63 localities nationwide have detention centers, in which Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi have 2 detention centers. Nearly 800 district-level units also have detention facilities.
