Internet traffic back to normal in mid-July

Repair of the Asia-Pacific Gateway (APG) submarine optic cable system will not be completed prior to July 14, so international Internet traffic will remain choppy until then, according to a source from the APG management board.

The line broke on June 20, slowing down Vietnam’s connections to international websites, especially Facebook and Yahoo. Domestic Internet services have been unaffected.

Four Vietnamese Internet service providers – VNPT, Viettel, FPT Telecom and CMC Telecom – are using APG for international Internet traffic.

They account for 80% of Internet subscribers in Vietnam.

Before the launch of the APG line, the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) was the largest undersea optic cable system, accounting for 70% of the country’s international Internet traffic.

APG’s capacity is 10 times higher than AAG’s, so it is now responsible for most Internet connections between Vietnam and the rest of the world.
