Sweden buys waste to heat homes

It sounds unreasonable but Sweden buys waste to heat homes every year. This country is incredibly successful in recycling waste.

Currently, Sweden represents a world - leader in recycling industry. More than 99 percent of all household garbage is now recycled and is used as stable energy resources.

The Swedish government encourages people to categorize their waste into different types at home, joining hands for such recycling campagin. They incinerate about 50% of organic waste to make heat and energy.

The non-burnable waste (metal) can be recycled while the non-recyclable waste can be used as asphalt, brick, etc.

As estimated, about 1 percent of garbage in Sweden ends up in the dump. Each Swedish citizen landfills only 7kg of garbage, compared to 260kg per citizen in the UK.

Following a report, there are more than 250,000 households in Sweden uses heat from incineration plants, even electricity for their daily life. Sweden is one the countries which have the lowest price level in the world.

Each year, Sweden has to import up to 700,000 tons of garbage to meet this industry's demand since their garbage is always in shortage.
