A Silicon Valley firm is starting a joint project with the largest US defense contractor to produce and market a new global wireless data transmission system, Lockheed Martin said in a press release.
“Silicon Valley-based Collinear Networks is announcing a two and a half year ongoing collaboration with Lockheed Martin to advance its plan to commercialize a worldwide high-capacity wireless transmission technology for telecommunications,” the release stated on Thursday.
Collinear has been working with Lockheed Martin Space Systems under an exclusive licensing and development agreement since June 2014 to commercialize a hybrid point-to-point wireless transmission product developed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems, the release explained. The new system “incorporates innovative Free Space Optical (FSO) and Radio Frequency (RF) technologies,” Lockheed Martin said. Global internet and mobile data usage is growing and existing data transmission technologies are being challenged to address the growing capacity demand cost-effectively, the release noted.
