PSNews-Two weeks before the first attack by WannaCry was detected, VNCERT had implemented preventive measures and instructions to handle these types of malicious codes.

Nguyen Trong Duong, Director of Vietnam Computer Emergency Response Center (VNCERT) made that statement at the June’s briefing on state management of the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) held on June 5.

On May 12, when WannaCry broke out in more than 70 countries around the world, the Department of Information Security, a MIC's specialized agency and VNCERT, promptly started the battle against the malicious code.

One day later, VNCERT and the Information Security Department had issued instructions suggesting ways to handle WannaCry malicious code and sent a circular for public coordination, requesting agencies, units and rescue teams to monitor and block connections to the server hosting WannaCry. As a result, damages by the malicious code were curbed.

According to statistics by VNCERT, to date, few Vietnamese ministries, branches, localities, agencies or enterprises suffered serious damages caused by WannaCry. Several units were attacked by this kind of malicious code, but the situations were then quickly kept under control.

At the briefing, Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan praised the two specialized units on their active preparations and early warnings, recommendations and guidance to all agencies, organizations and people; as a result, WannaCry has caused few losses to the country, compared to to many countries around the world.
