The recent reports about mobile internet speed, all show that Vietnam is among the countries with the slowest mobile internet in the world.

The reports used as evidence in this article were made by prestigious companies which evaluate the speed of internet network and mobile internet throughout the world – Akamai, OpenSignal and Ookla.

‘Akamai State of Internet Q1/2016’, the latest report of Akamai, showed that the average speed of Vietnam’s mobile internet in the first quarter of the year was 2.6 Mbps, while the peak speed was 29.7 Mbps.

As such, Vietnam was positioned nearly at the bottom in the Asia-Pacific ranking. It was just above New Caledonia with the average and highest speed at 2.2 Mbps and 26.4 Mbps, respectively.

As for other regions, Algeria was at the bottom of the Africa ranking (2.2Mbps and 29.5Mbps), Turkey at the bottom of the Europe ranking (6.4Mbps and 76.9Mbps), and Elsanvando in North America (3.8Mbps and 21.1Mbps) and Venezuela in South America (2.3Mbps and 22.3Mbps) at the end

Vietnam was just above Algeria, Gana, New Caledonia and Venezuela.

Akamai said its survey was conducted based on the use of smartphones, tablets, personal computers and other devices to connect internet through mobile networks. Every country in the list of surveyed countries must have at least 25,000 separate IP addresses recognized by Akamai.

OpenSignal last August released the report on mobile internet speed after conducting a survey on 822,556 users who installed OpenSignal’s app from 95 countries and territories.

The noteworthy item of this year’s report is that OpenSignal considers the speed of both 3G and 4G in order to have a more objective perspective.

The mobile internet average speed of one country depends on its internet speed and the popularity of 3G/4G networks. For example, the country which has high speed of LTE, but has low popularity of 4G will be ranked below the country with medium LTE speed but high 4G popularity.

In the OpenSignal report, Vietnam, with the speed of 3.81 Mbps, ranks 82nd among 95 surveyed countries and territories, just above some Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, the Philippines and Iraq.

South Korea tops the list with the speed of 41.34 Mbps, followed by Singapore (31.19 Mbps), Hungary (26.15 Mbps), Australia (25.01 Mbps) and Denmark (23.35 Mbps). Afghanistan is at the bottom with 2.17 Mbps.

In mid-2015, Tech in Asia published an article on mobile internet speed, showing that the average mobile internet speed in the world was 12.4 Mbps, while it was 10.9 Mbps in Asia.

Vietnam was at the bottom in Asia with 1.9 Mbps, which means it had speed even lower than the average level in the region and below Myanmar (2.5 Mbps), Laos (3.1 Mbps) and Cambodia (6.4 Mbps).
