Firefighters told the station there were about 50 people inside the building in Oakland's Fruitvale district.

Police told the station the building houses a group of artists and their studios.

Friends and family of party-goers were on social media early Saturday looking to confirm the whereabouts of loved ones, according to the East Bay Times.

Some people have posted images and messages on Facebook of people they believe are missing, while other have posted that they had escaped safely, the paper reported.

“It was too hot, too much smoke, I had to get out of there,” Bob Mule, a photographer who lives at the building, told the paper. “I literally felt my skin peeling and my lungs being suffocated by smoke. I couldn’t get the fire extinguisher to work.”

Mule suffered minor burns. He said he saw another person jump from a second floor window.

The fire erupted during an event featuring musician Golden Donna’s 100% Silk West Coast tour, the paper reported.

A police spokesman referred an Associated Press reporter to the coroner's office. The office said the coroners were also at the scene Saturday morning and unavailable for comment.
