Thomas Vargas, Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Indonesia, described the situation in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine State as worrisome and assured that the office would work with authorities to seek long-term solutions to the Rohingya issue, reported Antara News.
The same day, hundreds of Indonesians gathered outside the Myanmar Embassy in Jakarta to protest against violence caused by division and religious conflicts between the Buddhist community and Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
The violence situation in Myanmar started in 2012, killing many people and forcing thousands of people to flee their country to be refugees in neighbouring countries.
As of May 2015, Indonesia has received over 13,800 refugees, including Rohingya people from Rakhine State, according to the representative of UNHCR in Indonesia.
