Vietnam strikes gold at IMO 2023

PSNews - All six Vietnamese students have won medals, including two gold medals, at the International Mathematical Olympiad 2023 (IMO) held in Japan.

The two gold medals went to Pham Viet Hung, a student majoring in Natural Science of Vietnam National University Hanoi; and Nguyen An Thinh, a student of Tran Phu high school for the gifted in Hai Phong City.

Along with the two golds, Vietnamese students also secured two silver and two bronze medals.

They all scored a total of 180 points. With this achievement, Vietnam ranked sixth among more than 110 countries and territories taking part in the annual competition.

China topped the rankings, scoring 240 points, followed by the United States (222pts), the Republic of Korea (215pts), Romania (208pts) and Japan (181pts).

The contest is taking place in Japan from July 2 to 13, attracting the participation of approximately 600 students.

IMO has been held annually since 1959. Vietnam sent its first students to the contest in 1974 and has since won 266 medals, including 69 golds, 115 silvers and 82 bronzes.

In last year’s IMO in Norway, Vietnam ranked fourth among 104 countries and territories, with two golds, two silvers, and two bronzes.
