Vietnam attends preparatory meeting of the 8th ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Drug Matters

A Vietnamese delegation led by Director of the Counter-Narcotics Police Department Major General Nguyen Van Vien under the Ministry of Public Security attended the preparatory meeting of the ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Drug Matters (AMMD8) in Vientiane, Laos, on August 10.

Vietnam has coordinated with ASEAN countries to deploy various efforts, participated actively in both bilateral and multilateral cooperation activities, and made a large contribution to preventing and controlling illicit drug trafficking in the region over the past time. 

In terms of multilateral cooperation, Vietnam contributed positively to regional meetings on counter-narcotics, such as the 14th and 15th ASEAN Drug Monitoring Network Seminar in June 2023, collaborated in developing a draft ASEAN Drug Monitoring Report in 2022, joint efforts in drafting the ARF Work Plan for the period of 2023-2025, and coordinated with partners in preparing the agenda for the SOMTC23 Conference in Indonesia.

Reguarding bilateral cooperation, Vietnam increased information sharing with regional countries on the illicit drug trafficking situation and new methods and tricks of illicit drug traffickers, contributing to strengthening bilateral coordination and preventing and controlling illicit drug trafficking and other related crimes.

At the end of the meeting, delegates agreed on the draft documents for AMMD8, including: Draft agenda for AMMD8, draft AMMD8 program and activities, and draft Chairman's Statement at AMMD8.
