Vietnam, Iltaly strengthen cooperation in crime prevention and control

A high-ranking delegation of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, led by Minister of Public Security General To Lam, visited Italy from 17-19 July, at the invitation of Minister of the Interior of Italy Matteo Piantedosi.

Overview of the talks between Minister To Lam and the Italian Ministry of Interior.

Within the framework of the visit, Minister To Lam held talks with the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Justice of the Italian Republic to discuss international issues of mutual concern and bilateral cooperation.

*At the meeting with Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, Minister To Lam expressed his delight at visiting Italy on the occasion of the two countries’ celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations (1973 - 2023) and the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Vietnam-Italy strategic partnership (2013 - 2023).

During the talks, the two ministers agreed that the cooperation between the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the Italian Ministry of the Interior was developing with many positive results.

Meanwhile, the agreement on counter-crime cooperation signed by the two sides in 2014 serves as a basis for the two sides to strengthen cooperation in crime prevention and control.

So far, the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam has sent a number of officers to participate in training courses on crime prevention and control organized by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, as well as on peacekeeping operations.

At the meeting with Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio, Minister To Lam highly appreciated that the Italian Government has included Vietnam in the list of 20 countries that Italy continues to prioritize promoting trade and investment until 2030.

Minister To Lam and Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio sign the "Extradition Agreement" and the "Agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons".

Additionally, Italia expanded its Regional Development Cooperation Office in Hanoi, which issued a new strategy to bolster cooperation with ASEAN in general, and Vietnam in particular.

Minister To Lam affirmed that Vietnam is ready to act as a bridge between Italy and ASEAN, supporting Italy to participate in cooperation mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific region, while actively advocating Italy in multilateral forums.

Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio suggested, the two sides soon complete procedures to put signed agreements in effect, pay attention to the extradition and transfer of sentenced persons upon request, increase exchange of delegations at all levels to enhance mutual understanding, share information and experience in the fight against crime, especially organized crime, transnational crime, crime with the use of high technology, illicit drug trafficking, economic offences, illegal immigration.

He agreed that the two sides should meet each other’s requests for extradition and transfer of persons sentenced to imprisonment, strengthen coordination in apprehending and handing over wanted people related to the two countries in conformity with the current laws of each country and on the basic of international law.
