Tea exports record double-digit growth in 2022

Tea exports in the fourth quarter of 2022 amounted to 54,000 tonnes, bringing in US$79 million, up 53.6% in volume and 30.3% in value compared to the same period from last year.

According to the Import and Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), the average tea export price in the reviewed period stood at US$1,460 per tonne, a year-on-year decline of 15.1%.

Last year witnessed Vietnam export 146,000 tonnes of tea, raking in US$237 million, up 15.3% in volume and 310.7% year on year.

The average export price of tea last year was US$1,620 per tonne, down 4% compared to figures recorded in 2021.

With these positive results, there will be a bright prospect for the export of tea in 2023, particularly as the global economic situation is expected to get better and demand for goods will increase in major export markets.

Green tea was the main export item for 11 months of 2022, reaching 55.200 tonnes valued at US$104 million, up 12.2% in volume and 9.1% in value compared to the same period from 2021.

The average export price of green tea hit US$1,884.2 per tonne, an annual decrease of 2.8%.

Key consumers of Vietnamese tea include Pakistan, Taiwan (China), Japan, the United States, and the UK.

Vietnam boasts over 170 tea varieties, with local production areas moving towards organic farming for sustainable growth and to meet changing market demands.
